Kitchen Storage Budget: RM0–30

5 Kitchen Storage Picks Under RM30 for Small Homes

This guide is for renters in flats or small terrace houses with a one-wall kitchen who want extra storage without spending more than RM30 on a single item. It is not for large kitchens that need heavy steel shelving, or for anyone storing 5-litre glass pots every day.

Measure before you buy

Three numbers decide whether a cheap rack is useful or ends up in the store room: opening width, counter depth, and the gap between counter and upper cabinet. Klang Valley flat kitchens usually give a 60 cm counter and 45–50 cm of clearance — but older rental units often give 40 cm, which is why the 62 cm rack here has to stand outside the cabinet zone.

Take a tape measure, note the three numbers on your phone, and take them with you when you shop. Buying without measuring is the most common way RM30 disappears.

Three measurement mistakes that repeat

  • Measuring width only. A 42 cm rack fits a 45 cm gap, but the cabinet door above may no longer open fully.
  • Forgetting the skirting. The wall behind a rack often has an 8–10 cm skirting, so usable depth is less than what you measured at floor level.
  • Assuming the floor is level. In older rentals, tiled floors commonly slope 1–2 cm per metre. Anything on castors will drift.

What we do not recommend under RM30

At this price you are buying plastic and adhesive, not steel. That means three hard limits: about 3 kg per shelf, a 6–12 month adhesive life in damp areas, and stability that depends on the floor.

If you store glass pots, ceramic mug sets, or anything above 5 kg, save up and buy one steel rack at RM65–RM80. One rack that works beats three that wobble.

1 3-Tier PP Plastic Kitchen Rack

RM27.90

Retailer
Shopee
Dimensions
42 × 28 × 62 cm (12 cm per shelf)
Best for
A kitchen corner or beside the fridge, for sauce bottles and small jars
Not for
Glass pots, ceramic mug sets, or anything above 3 kg per shelf
Price checked

This rack works best when heavy items go on the bottom shelf and bottles on the top two. The plastic legs wobble slightly on a wet tiled floor, so dry the floor before loading it. If your upper cabinet sits only 45 cm above the counter, the third shelf will foul the cabinet door — measure that gap first. I would not put a blender or rice cooker on it.

Pros

  • Light at about 1.1 kg — easy to move alone
  • PP plastic, washes with soap and water
  • 62 cm tall, fits under standard upper cabinets

Cons

  • Comfortable load is about 3 kg per shelf
  • Light-coloured plastic shows scratches quickly

Alternative: If you need more load capacity, move up to a 4-tier steel rack at roughly RM65–RM80.

2 3-Tier Adhesive Corner Shelf

RM18.50

Retailer
Shopee
Dimensions
22 × 22 × 45 cm, 2 kg per shelf
Best for
A dry wall corner at the side of the kitchen, for spices and small bottles
Not for
Rough tiled walls, walls that catch steam, or 2-litre oil bottles

Adhesive strength depends entirely on the surface, not the price. It lasts on flat dry painted walls, but near a cooking zone the oil vapour softens the tape within weeks. Before mounting, wash the wall with soapy water, dry it for 24 hours, and wait 48 hours before loading. If one shelf falls once, do not re-stick it on the same pad.

Pros

  • No drilling — safe for rentals
  • Uses the dead corner between two walls
  • Removable without leaving holes

Cons

  • Adhesive fails on textured or greasy tiles
  • Hard to trust with large glass bottles

3 Airtight Container 1.5L (Set of 3)

RM29.00

Retailer
Lazada
Dimensions
10 × 10 × 18 cm each, 1.5 litre
Best for
Nuts, sugar, coffee, biscuits — dry goods that go soft fast
Not for
Liquids, or storing rice for more than four people

In Malaysia the real problem is humidity rather than insects, which is why four-side clips beat press-on lids. Make sure the container is bone dry before filling — one spoon of water at the base turns into a smell within three days. Pull out and wash the gasket once a month; it is the first part to fail. If you store rice, buy a 5-litre container instead of three 1.5-litre ones.

Pros

  • Four-side clips, tighter than press-on lids
  • Square footprint, stacks with no wasted gap
  • Three fit on a single rack shelf

Cons

  • Will not hold 5 kg of rice — that needs 5 litres or more
  • Silicone gaskets degrade in hot water

Alternative: For rice, a 5-litre container with a wheeled base runs about RM45.

4 Slim 2-Tier Trolley Rack

RM25.90

Retailer
Shopee
Dimensions
38 × 24 × 58 cm, 4 castors
Best for
A narrow gap beside the fridge or at the end of the counter
Not for
Uneven floors, or if you need an extra work surface

The real advantage here is flexibility rather than volume: pull it out while cooking, push it back after. It only helps if you have a 25 cm gap beside the counter — measure first, because many flat kitchens leave a 20 cm gap that is not enough. Keep heavy items off the top tier or the trolley will lean and lift a front castor.

Pros

  • Rolls aside while you cook
  • Fits a 24 cm gap between fridge and wall
  • Bottom tier takes larger containers

Cons

  • Small castors catch on tile joints
  • Wobbles if the load is uneven

5 Over-Cabinet-Door Rack

RM12.90

Retailer
Lazada
Dimensions
30 × 12 × 8 cm, hook fits 2 cm doors
Best for
Inside a base cabinet for lids and thin items
Not for
Thick doors, or bottles and mugs

This is the cheapest fix and the most limited one. It suits thin light items only, and it interferes with soft-close hinges. Check your door thickness before buying — 2 cm is the usual limit and many older IKEA cabinets are thicker. If the door no longer closes flush after fitting, you have lost the seal and the contents will go damp.

Pros

  • Cheapest item here, zero installation
  • Uses the inside of the door, usually empty
  • Good for cling film, spoons, container lids

Cons

  • Door will not close flush above 2 cm thickness
  • Contents rattle every time the door shuts

Common questions

How tall a rack fits under kitchen cabinets?

Measure from the countertop to the underside of the upper cabinet. Most Malaysian flat kitchens give 45–50 cm. Subtract 3 cm for hand clearance, so 42–47 cm is the safe ceiling. The 62 cm rack here is meant to stand outside the cabinet zone, not under it.

Are adhesive racks genuinely safe in a rental?

For light items, yes. They are safe in the sense that they leave no holes, but they are not safe in the sense of load. Keep each shelf under 2 kg and never mount them on walls near the cooking zone, where oil vapour weakens the bond.

How much weight does the plastic 3-tier rack hold?

A comfortable 3 kg per shelf, evenly spread. That covers six to eight sauce bottles or two 1 kg jars. If you need more, you need steel, and steel starts around RM65.

Can I return an item if the size does not fit?

That depends on the Shopee or Lazada seller, not on Zanilia. Check the returns label on the product page before paying, and keep the original box for the first seven days.

Why do the prices here differ from the platform?

Prices were checked on 28 October 2026, and platforms change prices and vouchers almost weekly. Treat these numbers as a budget reference, not a price promise. Always confirm on the product page before buying.
