Under-Sink Organizers: 3 Picks and What to Measure First

This guide is for anyone with a sink cabinet they only use for a bottle of dish soap, who wants that space to actually work. It is not for cabinets where the pipe comes up through the middle of the floor, or where the base has already rotted from a leak.

The three measurements that decide everything

Under-sink space is not an empty box — it is a box with pipes in it. Before buying an organizer, measure:

  1. Clear height beside the pipe, not in the middle. This is often 25–30 cm even when the cabinet looks 50 cm tall.
  2. Usable depth from door to back wall, minus 3 cm for the hinge.
  3. Trap position: centre, left or right. This decides whether a two-tier rack can go in at all.

If the trap is centred, a full-width 60 cm rack usually will not fit. Choose a split rack, or a low pull-out drawer.

Why this space swallows things

The sink cabinet is the darkest and deepest space in the kitchen. Without an organizer, whatever goes at the back stays there until it spoils. That is a design problem, not a discipline problem.

The most effective fix is not a bigger rack but access: anything that slides out. That is why a 12 cm drawer often beats a tall two-tier rack.

What should not live here

The sink cabinet is the dampest zone in the kitchen. Do not store rice, flour, biscuits or anything in paper. Do not store electrical appliances. Keep only what survives moisture: soap, sponges, foil, plastic boxes and cleaning tools.

A two-tier rack doubles under-sink space faster than anything else, but it also hides leaks faster than anything else. Check the pipe joints monthly — if there is a drip, pull the rack out and fix it first. Adjustable legs matter because cabinet bases are almost never level, and a rocking rack ends with bottles on the floor.

Pros

  • Adjustable legs clear an off-centre trap
  • Top tier holds soap and sponges
  • Height changes without tools

Cons

  • Top tier hides the pipes if they leak
  • Plastic picks up smell on a damp base

Alternative: If hiding the pipes worries you, choose a single low pull-out drawer and keep them visible.

A low drawer solves the actual problem with a sink cabinet: things at the back vanish permanently. At 12 cm tall it is for small items, not bottles. Fitting needs two screws into the cabinet base — the one compromise for renters, though the holes are tiny and easy to fill.

Pros

  • Reach the back without crawling
  • Low profile, so the pipes stay visible above it
  • Metal runners outlast plastic ones

Cons

  • Only 12 cm tall — no large detergent bottles
  • Needs small screws into the cabinet base

If your cabinet is only 40 cm tall, this is the only option here that takes zero floor space. It is also the only one that risks stopping the door from closing. Test with the door open first: if the rack touches the trap when the door shuts, you will need to remove one side.

Pros

  • Uses no floor space at all
  • Good for foil, plastic bags and tea towels
  • Comes off whenever you want

Cons

  • Stops some doors closing flush
  • Low load, about 2 kg

Common questions

How tall is the space under a typical kitchen sink?

Standard Malaysian base cabinets give 45–55 cm from the base to the underside of the sink, but the trap usually eats 15–20 cm in the middle. Clear space beside the pipe is often only 25–30 cm tall. Measure at the side, not the centre.

How do I avoid hiding a leaking pipe?

Choose a rack with a removable top tier and make a monthly pipe check part of your routine. If that worries you, use a low pull-out drawer that leaves the pipes fully visible.

Is under the sink a good place for food?

Not recommended. It is the dampest spot in the kitchen and sits next to the pipe and food waste. Keep soap, sponges, foil and cleaning tools here; keep rice and flour in upper cabinets or airtight containers.

Does the pull-out drawer need screws?

Yes, two to four small screws into the cabinet base. In a rental, a 3 mm hole is easy to fill with white putty before you move out. If you cannot make any holes at all, choose a freestanding rack.

Why does the price range from RM28 to RM42?

Mostly runners and adjustability. The RM28–RM30 models use plastic runners and door hooks; the RM40-plus models use metal runners and adjustable legs. In a permanently damp space, metal runners last far longer.
